The history of Black people is often inadequately reflected in the general history of Canada; therefore, there is a need for specific attention to be paid on said history. February (Black History Month) is the month in which we bear witness to the progress, richness, and diversity of the achievements and contributions of Black people in Canada and around the world. It is also a time to reflect on the issues and difficulties that were faced, and continue to be faced within the Black community.

During the 1920s an African American named Carter G. Woodson created and promoted Negro History Week in the USA. In 1976, the month-long celebration was implemented. In 1995, the Government of Canada officially declared February to be Black History Month throughout the country.

Here in Winnipeg, the Annual Black History Month Celebration was launched by the local Chapter of the National Black Coalition of Canada in 1981. The honor and responsibility of organizing these events have passed through different organizations throughout the years so in 2016, the official Black History Month Celebration Committee Inc. was formed. The events are open to the public and we hope to see a varied body of participants, of all communities and ages, in the hope that the linkages between all our histories become evident.
